When Apple Watch Ultra launched in 2022, we knew we had to design a new band from the ground up. Ultra isn’t just another smartwatch—it’s bigger, bolder, and better suited for adventure. That meant a traditional watch band wasn’t going to cut it. We needed to build something just as tough and just as capable. Enter Nomad’s Rocky Point Band.

We took cues from off-road vehicles like the Rivian R1T and Land Rover Defender. These cars perform in extreme conditions while maintaining a refined, purposeful look. This design philosophy shaped every decision we made for Rocky Point. Every detail had to find the perfect balance between durability, comfort, and performance.

Strength and weight were critical considerations. We turned to Grade 5 titanium for the hardware, prized for its corrosion resistance and strength-to-weight ratio. Titanium is used in high-performance aerospace and automotive applications for a reason; it’s incredibly strong without being too heavy or bulky. By integrating titanium into the design, we created a closure that’s both secure and lightweight.

When it came to the band’s body, we went with compression-molded FKM fluoroelastomer rubber. It’s tough yet flexible, offering a level of resilience that stands up to harsh conditions while remaining comfortable for all-day wear. Unlike traditional rubber or silicone bands, FKM is resistant to heat, sweat, and exposure to the elements. Whether you’re trekking through rough terrain, paddling into the surf, or pushing through a high-intensity workout, this band holds up.

A band built for extreme use needs a closure that won’t come undone when it matters most. That’s why we engineered a fully custom buckle system designed for high-intensity activities like mountain biking and surfing. The buckle locks securely in place, ensuring your watch stays put.

Comfort was another priority for us. Performance bands can sometimes feel bulky or strictly for workouts, but we designed Rocky Point for all-day wear. The ‘Z’ shape transition section adds flexibility where it’s needed most, letting the band move naturally with your wrist. Plus, deep ventilation channels keep airflow high and sweat buildup low.

We like to think of Rocky Point Band as a seamless extension of Ultra. Every aspect, from the compression-molded FKM to the precision-machined titanium hardware, was designed to enhance your watch’s performance in the real world. Its wider profile complements Ultra’s larger watch face, creating a balanced, integrated look that feels just right on your wrist.
