Introducing Green Chrome

| Words by Madeline Myers

You've been asking for more leather colors, and we’ve been listening. After weeks of development, we’re excited to introduce Horween’s Chromexcel leather in Green Chrome to Modern Leather Case and Folio.

Green Chrome

Green Chrome is a forest green that’s so dark it’s almost black. We wanted to introduce a color that felt fresh and exciting, but also complemented our established Black, Rustic Brown, and English Tan shades. It's bold and different, yet refined enough to stand up to your leather's sophistication.

What is Chromexcel?

Chromexcel, or CXL, is one of Horween’s finest leathers. It’s been hand-tanned the same way since the early 1900s, and requires 89 separate processes over the course of 28 days. The result is a rich, shiny leather with beautiful tonal variations and the unique ability to rapidly patina. Here’s some of the things we like most about it:

  • It has a deep, rich color and waxy feel in hand.
  • It patinas beautifully and more quickly than other leathers.
  • Scratches and marks can be polished out.
  • It’s heat-resistant.
  • It molds and conforms easily.

How is Chromexcel made?

CXL is combination-tanned, starting with a chrome base tannage for resilience and character, followed by a vegetable retannage for color and shine. A quick brush-up on these terms: tannage is the initial process of turning raw hide into leather, while retannage fine-tunes the leather’s final qualities. After tanning, the leather is hot-stuffed with a blend of waxes, oils, and grease, giving it that silky feel and deep color.

One thing that sets CXL apart from other leathers is that it’s air-dried. This allows the leather to shrink back on itself, creating a tighter, more calf-like break. And what exactly does a “tighter, more calf-like break” look like? It just means the leather has a smooth, refined texture with small, delicate creases typical of high-quality calfskin.

Caring for Your Chromexcel

Like most Horween leathers, CXL is hand-tanned using all-natural waxes and oils. It isn’t preserved or coated like synthetic leathers, which means it’s much more susceptible to scratches and marks in the first few weeks of use. With time, it will absorb these scratches and marks and become more resistant to them. Learn more about the patina process in this blog post

When you first receive your Chromexcel leather gear, be gentle with it. Avoid sharp surfaces, objects, and any exposure to moisture, and be sure to regularly treat it with a high-quality leather conditioner. We’re big fans of this Leather Conditioner by Ashland Leather Co. Learn more about caring for your leather in our Leather Care Guide

Limited Edition Green Chrome for iPhone 16

Our Limited Edition Green Chrome Modern Leather Case and Modern Leather Folio celebrate all the best parts of Chromexcel leather. These first-of-their-kind cases have a luxurious look, feel, and smell, and they develop a rich, beautiful patina over time.

We've paired the leather with modern design touches, like a grooved TPU bumper and tactile aluminum buttons. The cases have slightly raised bumpers to protect your iPhone screen from everyday wear, and precise cutouts make it easy to access the bottom ports and all-new Camera Control. Plus, they have integrated neodymium magnets for flawless compatibility with all MagSafe chargers and accessories.

For the Folio, we’ve upgraded the card slot to all-leather for a seamless look whether it’s open or closed. You all loved iPhone 15’s optional magnetic clasp so we carried that feature over to this year’s Folio.

Modern Leather Folio has three card slots and one larger cash slot.

Our Green Chrome leather is a true labor of love, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Keep in mind, Limited Edition products are typically produced only once, so once they’re gone, they’re gone. Be sure to snag your Green Chrome gear while you can.
