Behind the Design: Sierra Stone Rocky Point Band
| Words by Madeline Myers & Harvey HunerbergEarlier today, we introduced Sierra Stone Rocky Point Band to our Limited Edition lineup. To mark the launch of one of our most distinctive colorways yet, we sat down with Product Manager Harvey Hunerberg for a closer look at the ideas, materials, and decisions that brought the band to life.
How is Sierra Stone made? Walk us through the process step by step.
Harvey: In its raw form, FKM is a gray, putty-like substance. When we make our monochrome bands, we add a high concentration of dye and mix it thoroughly to fully saturate the material. With Sierra Stone, the process looked a little different. We selected six colors and added the dye in increments, mixing slowly and carefully to avoid overblending. We wanted to create a swirling, marble-like effect, and to have each individual color remain visible. Once the FKM was heated and compressed into the shape of Rocky Point Band, the colors meld together to form Sierra Stone’s final look. The coolest thing about this band is that no two have exactly the same pattern. Each one is completely unique.

What other color combos or pattern combos did we play with?
Harvey: This method for mixing color into the FKM is new for Apple Watch bands and unique to our Nomad Rocky Point Bands. We played with several different color combinations, but chose this gray-based mixture because of the immediate complement of the colors. From there, we fine-tuned the pantones, amounts of color dye, and amount of color dispersion to achieve the final Sierra Stone look.
How would you describe the colorway?
Harvey: Sierra Stone combines gray, blue, white, and green to create a color that echoes the granite landscape of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

What should customers expect when they receive their Sierra Stone band?
Harvey: Each Sierra Stone band will have a slightly different combination and mixture of the colors we used. This means that your band is unique, however, it also means it’s likely to look a little different than the images on the packaging and on our website.
Why is Sierra Stone perfect for Rocky Point Band in particular?
Harvey: Rocky Point Band is designed to be adventure ready, up for any activity that you put your Apple Watch Ultra through. The Sierra Nevadas are a special landscape in California that are home to some of the best outdoor adventuring in the U.S. This colorway is meant to embody the natural colors of this amazing mountain range and pair perfectly with your Ultra, wherever you take it.

As with all Limited Editions, once it’s gone, it’s gone for good! If you love Sierra Stone, be sure to grab one while you can. Questions? Feedback? Drop us a line at support@nomadgoods.com and someone from our team will be happy to chat!
