Apple Just Unveiled iPhone 17. Here’s What You Need To Know.
| Words by Madeline MyersThis morning’s “Awe Dropping” event certainly lived up to its name. This year’s keynote introduced iPhone 17, major updates to Apple Watch, the next generation of AirPods Pro, and more. With new materials and designs, improved durability, and smarter software, Apple is positioning 2025 as a breakthrough year across its ecosystem.
Hello, iPhone 17
Apple introduced 4 models: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the brand-new iPhone Air. The Plus model has been retired to make way for the Air, which brings a slimmer, lighter design. Display sizes range from 6.3 inches on the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro, to 6.6 inches on the iPhone Air, and up to 6.9 inches on the Pro Max.
All models feature ProMotion displays with up to 120 Hz refresh rates and support for Always-On Display.
iPhone 17
The standard iPhone 17 might look familiar, but it includes several key upgrades. The new Ceramic Shield 2 offers 3x better scratch resistance and improved brightness visibility over its Ceramic Shield predecessor. At its core, the A19 chip delivers faster performance, an updated display engine to support ProMotion and Always-On Display, and a stronger Neural Engine to power Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26.
Photography sees a boost with a 48 MP Dual Fusion rear camera, enhanced detail, and an upgraded Center Stage front camera. Battery life also steps up—a 10-minute charge now yields up to eight hours of video playback. Apple’s iOS 26, with its new Liquid Glass interface and AI-powered features, rounds out the experience.
iPhone Air
The star of the show was undoubtedly the new iPhone Air. At just 5.6mm thin, it’s the slimmest iPhone ever made, yet it doesn’t sacrifice performance. Built with a titanium chassis and Ceramic Shield 2 on both front and back, the Air is as durable as it is sleek. Inside, the A19 Pro chip delivers the fastest CPU in any smartphone, while a new C1X modem promises class-leading power efficiency.
The Air also introduces an advanced 48MP Fusion camera system on the back, paired with a Center Stage front camera that keeps everyone in frame whether you’re shooting landscape or portrait. With ProMotion and Always-On Display included, plus an eSIM setup and impressive battery life, the Air is designed to slot perfectly between the standard iPhone 17 and the 17 Pro.
iPhone 17 Pro & Pro Max
For professionals and creators, Apple introduced redesigned versions of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Both models now feature an aluminum unibody with ceramic glass on the front and back. They also debut Apple’s new Vapor Chamber cooling system, which provides 40 percent better sustained performance compared to last year’s Pro devices, ensuring that the A19 Pro chip can maintain high speeds for longer periods of time.
The Pro models shine most brightly in their cameras. The Pro Max introduces a 48-megapixel Telephoto lens, replacing last year’s 12-megapixel version, while the Pro adds a 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens. Together with a trio of 48-megapixel rear cameras, these improvements make the Pro lineup Apple’s most powerful option yet for photographers and videographers.
Design, Battery, and iOS 26
Apple has also reimagined the materials used across the lineup. The Pro models now combine aluminum with ceramic glass, while the Air relies on titanium for strength and lightness. All four models come with larger batteries and more efficient performance. They run iOS 26, which introduces a new Liquid Glass design language for a sleeker, more unified interface.
iOS 26 also brings forward Apple’s growing focus on artificial intelligence. Live translation is now built directly into Phone, FaceTime, and Messages, and users can take advantage of improved lock screen customization along with more powerful, AI-driven features throughout the system.
Camera Redesign
The iPhone 17 family now shares a bold new camera design. Instead of the traditional square camera bump, all models feature a rectangular camera bar with rounded edges that stretches horizontally across the back of the device. This shift signals Apple’s emphasis on expanded imaging power. Enhanced Fusion Ultra Wide technology produces sharper detail in more varied conditions, while the Center Stage front camera provides better framing for calls, group shots, and selfies.
Beyond iPhone: AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch
Apple also refreshed its accessories. The AirPods Pro (3rd Gen) now deliver significantly better Active Noise Cancellation, new foam ear tips in five sizes, heart rate tracking during workouts, and live translation powered by Apple Intelligence. Battery life also improved, reaching up to 8 hours of listening, or 10 hours in Transparency mode with Hearing Aid.
The new Apple Watch Series 11 is Apple’s slimmest and most durable yet, with twice the scratch resistance of the Series 10, sleep scoring, hypertension alerts, Workout Buddy, and a 24-hour battery life. The Watch SE 3 keeps affordability in focus while adding Always-On Display, faster charging, and advanced sleep and temperature tracking. The Watch Ultra 3 boasts the largest, brightest display ever on an Apple Watch, improved satellite connectivity, and a stellar 42-hour battery runtime.
Truly Awe Dropping
Apple’s September 2025 event proved to be one of its most ambitious yet: a new iPhone lineup led by the ultra-slim iPhone Air, significant Pro model upgrades, AI-powered software, and exciting accessories like AirPods Pro 3 and Apple Watch Series 11.
